“Journey worker specialty electrician” means any person who has been licensed by the board as a journey worker specialty electrician to perform electrical work related to installing, repairing, altering and maintaining but not attachment of lighting and power circuit to the following: electronic equipment, sound public address systems, and communication systems other than equipment and systems for a single-family or two-family dwelling; master or communication radio and television receiving antenna systems; sound recording systems, other than systems for a single-family or two-family dwelling; burglar and fire alarm systems; low voltage remote control, other than a control for a single-family or two-family dwelling; and low voltage communication signal systems.

An applicant must:

- show proof of 3 years of experience, but not less than 6000 hours of experience in the trade

- show proof of satisfactory completion as accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College offering an appropriate program of study of 120 hours of electrical academic coursework

Act 35, SLH 2010 requires all Journey worker and maintenance electricians to provide verification of completion of electrical academic coursework conducted or accepted by a University of Hawaii Community College.

Currently, the University of Hawaii Community College system has deemed only one other update course equivalent to their own; The Hawaii Electricians Training Fund. Further inquiries regarding equivalency courses should be directed to the Honolulu Community College. (http://hawaii.hawaii.edu/)
